World costumes at the end of the 16th century (Cesare Vecellio)

Book De gli Habiti Antichi e Modérni di Diversi Parti di Mondo, published by Cesare Vecellio in Venice in 1590, contains a collection of world's costumes from the late 16th century. The following depictions are particularly interesting for the Croatian historical area, and thus for the Military Border:

  • 414 - Hungarian and Croatian nobleman
  • 415 - Croat, Hungarian, Pole
  • 416 - Hungarian costume
  • 417 - Slavonian or Dalmatian man
  • 418 - Slavonian or Dalmatian woman
  • 419 - Dalmatian woman from the island of Cres
  • 420 - Captain of Uskoks
  • 421 - a young woman from Dubrovnik

Attached is the Italian edition of Vecellio's book. Images that are interesting to us begin on p. 341v.

NOTE: There are several editions of the book on the Internet, such as the French-Italian bilingual edition (link) or Italian-Latin bilingual edition (link). Although these editions are useful and we, therefore, refer to them, it should be noted that some descriptions lack part of the original text. Thus, for example, the French-Italian edition omits a few sentences of the text when describing the Croats and captains of the Uskoks.
